During the summer of 2019 I attended several county fairs in Northern California to photograph the light trails of rides in motion. At first, I made wide shots, juxtaposing the rides’ soaring, plunging, spinning movements with the stillness of the fairgrounds. As I became more familiar with the rides, I zoomed in, as if freeing them from gravity (after all, they are gravity defying amusements), and made photographs that are abstract, even astronomical. In doing so, I turned the midway into my own Milky Way. No wonder some of these rides are named Orbiter, Quasar, and Starship 3000. So buckle up and hold on tight. Welcome to the Cosmic Carnival.
